How is the MCP credential maintained?

How do I keep my status?

Master Citizen Planner Jane:
Attends the Citizen Planner Advanced Academy Conference. The conference is approved for 6 contact hours to meet the .6 CEU requirements to maintain her MCP credential for two years.

Master Citizen Planner Dan:
Attends an MCP-approved Michigan Townships Association workshop on Land Division for four contact hours and receives .4 CEU. He also attends MCP-approved Michigan Association of Planning conference sessions for three contact hours and receives .3 CEU. The .7 CEUs earned meet the requirements to maintain his MCP credential for two years.

Once awarded, the MCP credential is maintained by completing six hours (.6 CEU) of training every two years. Participants can meet the CEU requirement by enrolling in MCP-approved courses available throughout the year. Approved training is offered by MSU Extension and partnering organizations.

The two-year period begins January 1 of the year following MCP designation.

If an MCP credential holder fails to meet the continuing education requirement, the MCP credential can be re-established at any time by re-enrolling in the Citizen Planner Fundamentals of Planning and Zoning and successfully completing the examination and capstone project.

What is a Continuing Education Unit (CEU)?

One CEU is defined as 10 hours of participation (.1 = 1 hour) in a non-credit organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. All MCP-approved courses offer CEUs through Michigan State University in compliance with the standards established by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training. A growing number of professional organizations recognize the CEU as the standard for high-quality personal and professional development training.
